The tiny hamlet of La Bucherie dates back to the early 18th century when it was the centre of a thriving loggery providing wood for a nearby forge. In the early 20th century the focus turned to farming, primarily goats for “chèvre” and many of the original buildings workers' cottages were abandoned or became derelict.
In 2014 the rebuilding and renovation of 2 cottages (Hibou & Hulotte) was completed and became available for the first time in 2015 as Les Chouettes.
Situated in this hidden jewel of SW France, the Charente, Les Chouettes holiday cottages are surrounded by unspoilt countryside with direct access to many outdoor activities and places of interest whilst providing the ideal spot to relax and unwind.
Situated at the far end of the C18th longere is our upside-down cottage, Hibou. Last inhabited in the 19th century it has been completely renovated to provide a delightful, spacious, one-bedroomed cottage.
The cottage is entered by a ground-floor hall from which the bathroom and bedroom are accessed. The large bathroom has separate bath and shower. The bedroom has a super king size bed and additional day bed which can be made up to guests individual requirements.
Stairs lead to the large open-plan, first floor living area comprising fully fitted kitchen, lounge and dining areas and fireplace with log-burner.
French doors lead from the dining area to a balcony and stairs to a small private terrace.
Guests also have access to a communal garden with 10m x 5m pool, petanque court and 2 acre stocked fishing lake.
The Charente region, which boasts the second warmest summers in France has lush rolling green countryside which lends itself to many kilometres of walking, running and cycling. The Lacs at Haute Charents offer sailing, swimming and beach activities. Cognac is a must for wine lovers.
Close to the Route de Coeur de Lion, the Chateau at Le Rochfoucauld, Rochechouart and Etagnac are beautiful. Whilst a little further afield, day trips can be made to Futureoscope at Poitiers, the French Atlantic Coast and the Dordogne and Perigeaux National Park.
For golfers, the excellent course at St Junien is an ideal way to work off the local produce that can be purchased at the twice weekly market at Le Rochfoucauld.
Take the hours drive to Cognac, the home of 'The Liqour of the Gods' and purchase some of the excellent brandy produced to a centuries old receipe. Limoges with its beautiful porcelain is also a similar distance away from Hibou. Close by is Angouleme, the regions capital, with its imposing cathedral and ancient ramparts makes for a interesting day trip.
