Things To Do In Reims

Champagne-Ardenne / Reims

The city of Reims in France's beautiful Champagne region is full of things to see and do. Strong historical connections and wonderful food and drink make this one of the most popular destinations in northern France but it still retains its very French charm. There are many charming gites in Champagne and most are within easy reach of Reims.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Built in the 13th Century, this spectacular cathedral is a must-see for anyone staying in one of the gites in Champagne or the neighbouring regions. The structure was seriously damaged in World War I but was lovingly restored back to its former glory in subsequent years. The Palace of Tau next-door to the cathedral is also well worth a visit and houses some stunning tapestries and statues.

The Museum of the Surrender

The surrender documents signalling the end of World War II were signed by Germany in Reims. Today, a museum stands around the room these historic documents were signed in but the room itself has been left exactly as it was on that day. Visitors can still see the chairs bearing the names of those present on that fateful day.

Champagne Tours

Veuve Clicquot, Lanson, Mumm and Pommery all operate champagne tours in Reims. A wonderful treat for anyone who enjoys a glass or two of fizz, these tours are fascinating and generally very well-run. There is even enough of interest to hold the attention of those who aren't particularly partial to the drink. On-site shops are great places to stock up on bottles to take home with you or back to one of the many rustic gites in Champagne where visitors to Reims often stay.

Shop

Reims is known for its many and varied independent shops. With quirky little outlets on most streets, Reims is a shopper's paradise. The chocolate shops are particularly tempting and each one sells its own special creations. Children and grown-ups alike will love perusing the rows and rows of hand-made chocolates, choosing between traditional classics and modern flavours.

Enjoy Fine-Dining

Reims is one of the gastronomic capitals of France with some of the finest restaurants in the country. Numerous establishments have Michelin stars and the wine lists in this part of the world are second to none. Check out restaurant websites for details of menus and special lunchtime or set menu offers to save Euros. For a more informal dining experience, Reims has lots of charming pavement cafes and brassieies where you can enjoy a delicious, laid-back lunch and watch the world go by.
