Gîtes and Villas in the Atlantic Coast

Holiday properties to rent · 24 available

Featured: La Belle Echappee (The Beautiful Escape)

The Atlantic Coast stretches along France's western seaboard, a region defined by long sandy beaches, salt marshes, pine forests and the rhythms of the tide. This is holiday territory that balances ease of access with space to breathe — nothing overdeveloped, nothing rushed.

The self-catering gîtes here put you within reach of barrier islands, working oyster ports, historic lighthouses and family-friendly beaches that seem to go on for miles. It's a part of France where the light feels different, the seafood tastes better, and half the pleasure is doing very little at a gentle pace.

About the Atlantic Coast

The Atlantic Coast is maritime France at its most accessible. Île d'Oléron and Île de Ré sit just offshore, connected by bridges, their villages built around fishing harbours and salt pans that have been worked for centuries. Inland, the Charente estuary threads through marshland and farmland, past the regional capital of Saintes with its Roman amphitheatre and thermal springs.

This isn't dramatic coastline in the Breton sense — no granite cliffs or crashing surf. Instead you get wide tidal beaches backed by dunes and cycle paths, shallow lagoons where children can paddle safely, and towns like Royan rebuilt in post-war modernist style after 1945 bombardment. The Cordouan Lighthouse, standing alone at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, has guided mariners since the 17th century and remains a remarkable piece of engineering.

Staying in a gîte along this coast means flexibility: you can spend mornings at the beach, afternoons exploring fortified citadels like the one at Château-d'Oléron, and evenings cycling back through pine-scented lanes. The region attracts French families in July and August but remains surprisingly quiet either side of peak season, when the light turns golden and the oyster shacks stay open.

Things to do in the Atlantic Coast

Zoo La Palmyre, near the tip of the Arvert peninsula, houses over 1,600 animals across 18 hectares of parkland and remains one of France's most-visited zoos. The Lighthouse of La Coubre rises 64 metres above the coastal forest, offering panoramic views over the Côte Sauvage after a climb of 300 steps. For families, Luna Park in Royan provides classic seaside amusements — carousels, bumper cars, arcades — within walking distance of the beach.

Château de la Roche Courbon, set inland near Saintes, combines a 15th-century castle with formal French gardens that were restored in the early 20th century. Planet Exotica brings together botanical gardens and animal enclosures in a single quirky site that appeals to younger children. The Citadelle du Château-d'Oléron, a star-shaped fortress begun under Richelieu, still dominates the island's northern tip and hosts craft markets through summer. Port des Salines on Île d'Oléron demonstrates traditional salt harvesting methods, with walking trails across the marshes where herons and egrets feed at low tide.

Food & drink

The Atlantic Coast runs on oysters. Marennes-Oléron produces more than half of France's oyster harvest, and you'll find dégustation stalls at every harbour where you can eat them standing up with a squeeze of lemon and a glass of Muscadet. The region's other signature is Cognac, distilled an hour inland, though locally you're more likely to encounter Pineau des Charentes — a fortified aperitif made from grape must and young Cognac.

Markets in Saintes, La Rochelle and the island villages sell fresh fish landed that morning, along with Charentes butter and chèvre from inland farms. For sit-down meals, Club Med Palmyre Atlantique offers reliable brasserie-style dining if you're near La Palmyre, though the real pleasure here is assembling picnics from the hypermarkets and eating them on the beach as the tide goes out.

Getting there

La Rochelle airport lies 76 kilometres north and handles seasonal flights from UK regional airports. Bordeaux–Mérignac airport, 84 kilometres south, offers year-round connections and car hire. Driving from Calais takes around seven hours via Rouen and Tours; from Saint-Malo ferry port it's about five hours down the N137 and A10.

Eurostar to Paris Gare du Nord puts you 462 kilometres from the coast — realistically a two-stage journey unless you're combining it with time in the capital. Once you're here, a car proves useful: the gîtes are spread across a wide area, beaches require short drives, and cycling the flat coastal paths is easiest when you can load bikes onto a roof rack.
