Whether you fancy a holiday in the deepest French countryside or something a stone's throw from the coast, Aquitaine has something for everyone. Here are five of the top things to do while you're there:

Take a Trip to Cap Ferret

Famous for its fantastic oysters and thriving restaurant scene, the upmarket resort of Cap Ferret is a wonderful place to head for a day out. Regular ferries leave Arachon to transport tourists the short distance to Cap Ferret and, although the headland resort is accessible by road, kids and adults alike will enjoy the boat ride.

Visit a Beach (or Several)

If you only manage to fit in one beach, make it La Lagune. Located between Biscarrosse and Arcachon, this stunning beach allows you to escape the crowds and relax in beautiful, natural surroundings. The beach looks out over a huge sand bar and is situated alongside a nature reserve, meaning its perfect for those looking for a quiet day out.

Hire a Bike

Aquitaine is a cyclist's paradise and there are many local companies hiring bikes to visitors. The region's forests are crisscrossed by cycle paths and there are trails for every level of ability and experience. Many of the paths are flat and are suitable for families with children. Lots of the beaches in Aquitaine are accessible by bike so take the opportunity to visit some quieter spots and enjoy a relaxing day on the coast without the stress of driving. If you're staying in one of the rural gites in Aquitaine, you should find the nearest town has bike rental companies.
