Cycling Holidays in the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is a wonderful choice for a cycling holiday. There are trails and paths suitable for all levels of ability, fitness and experienced. From short, lakeside bike rides to whole days cycling over rough terrain, there is something for everyone. If you're traveling light, you can hire bikes for adults and children from many agencies throughout the Loire Valley area.

Many Loire Valley gites are situated near to popular cycling routes so if you're lucky enough to be staying in one of these, you can leave the car behind and explore the surrounding areas entirely by bike. The Massif Central mountain range dominates the Loire region and the lower reaches of the mountains provide some excellent biking routes.

Experienced mountain bikers will thrive on the challenges of the tougher terrain, but there is more than enough to keep less-experienced cyclists happy, too. Relatively flat paths around the foothills are great for family cycling trips and there are lots of scenic spots to stop for picnics or just to sit and enjoy the views.

If any members of your group aren't confident cyclists and don't want to cycle on roads, it's probably best to load your bikes onto your car and drive to some of the easier cycling trails rather than attempting to cycle everywhere. One of the main attractions of a cycling holiday in the Loire Valley is that there are many magnificent chateaux in the region. Most are accessible by bike, although some will be more challenging to get to than others so check maps carefully before attempting to visit somewhere new.

The castle of Amboise is a popular destination for cyclists and affords spectacular views over the region and the River Loire. The Chateau of Chenonceau is another popular attraction and stands alongside the River Cher. The nearby Chateau Chambord is a must-see too. This architectural gem stands in beautifully manicured gardens and is well-maintained.

Many of the most popular cycling routes in the Loire Valley take you through peaceful countryside lanes and it's probably in this environment that you'll do most of your biking. Taking in the pretty Loire villages and stocking up on provisions at the local markets is one of the great pleasures of a cycling holiday.

If you're staying in one of the many rustic Loire Valley gites, you'll probably find your nearest food market only a short bike ride away, enabling you to buy fresh, local produce almost daily.
