A Day at The Palace of Versailles

Ile-de-France

One of the most popular attractions in the whole of France, the Palace of Versailles is a must-see for anyone staying in one of the gites in Ile de France. It was built when Versailles itself was nothing more than a small, rural village. The spectacular Palace is worth a fully-day visit in order that you can fully explore all it has to offer.

The Palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for over 30 years and attracts visitors from all over the world. The site on which the Palace stands was originally used as a hunting lodge by Louis XIII. His son, Louis XIV expanded and transformed the property and, in 1862, moved the government and royal court into Versailles. Between then and the French Revolution, the three kings who lived in the Palace continued to improve and extend the building.

The Palace ceased to be the French seat of power in the late 1780s but remains one of the most impressive and most visited buildings in the country. A day at Versailles starts with a tour of the Palace itself. The world-famous Hall of Mirrors is one of the focal points of any visit and provides an unforgettable experience. The King's Bedchamber and the sumptuous Grand Apartments are other highlights of a tour of the Palace and give just some idea of the luxury French royals lived in.

A guided tour of the "Hidden" Versailles is also available and takes in less well known areas of the Palace, such as the Royal Chapel and the private apartments of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Led by knowledgeable guides, these tours are an excellent way to gain a real insight into royal life at Versailles.

The gardens at Versailles are almost as impressive at the Palace itself. If you're lucky enough to visit in fine weather, you will find yourself happy to spend hours wandering around the immaculate gardens, admiring the intricate layout and impressive upkeep. The gardens dates back to the 1600s and include a stunning orangery, ornate fountains and huge lakes. If you're staying in one of the gites in Ile de France, a visit to the Palace of Versailles should be right near the top of your list.

It's easily reached by car or public transport and is an excellent day out in all weathers. If you're a frequent visitor to this part of France, the excellent "Year in Versailles" card offers unlimited entry for one year for one or two people and is very attractively priced at 50 for one person or 60 for two.
