The Three Best Museums in Pas de Calais

Nord-Pas-de-Calais

Many holidaymakers simply pass through Pas de Calais on their arrival in France but the region is also home to a wide range of attractions.

If you have a day or two to spare at the start of your holiday, why not stop off at a gite Pas de Calais and explore the area?

If time is limited, be sure to take in at least one of the following museums:

The Louvre-Lens Museum

The Louvre-Lens opened in 2012 and was built as part of a scheme which aims to attract more visitors to the town of Lens. The museum building consists of several different galleries stretching out from the main section. There is an impressive collection of art on display, with works dating back to 3,500BC. As well as the two main permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts temporary shows and events. You'll need at least three hours to see everything. The town of Lens itself has some pleasant areas for walking and decent cafes and bistros so it's worth taking a look around after you leave the museum.

The Lace Museum

The Lace Museum is situated in Calais and provides a fascinating insight into the history of lace-making. There are some beautiful displays of antique hand-made lace as well as plenty of information on the social history of France. The museum is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in fashion as it features displays changing fashions through the ages, right up to the present day. From the artisan lace-makers of the 17th Century up to the high-end designers of the 2000s, everything is covered. The museum is housed in an old lace factory and videos and presentations demonstrate what it was like to work in this fascinating industry.

Matisse Museum

Located in Henri Matisse's hometown of Le Cateau-Cambresis, this museum is dedicated to the great artist's life and works. The town's local textile industry has a huge impact on his creative style and works. The museum is housed in FFnelon Palace, a former archbishop's residence and covers everything from Matisse's early life to his death. As well as a comprehensive collection of Matisse's work, the museum has collections of the works of the poet TTriade and the artist Auguste Herbin. Le Cateau-Cambresis itself is a pleasant town for wandering around and there are plenty of pretty streets to explore before you head back to your gite Pas de Calais.
