The three best beaches in Languedoc

Languedoc-Roussillon

With over 40 beaches to choose from, the region of Languedoc is one of the most popular holiday destinations in France. The area is ideal for family self-catering holidays and there is certainly no shortage of gites in Languedoc. Staying near one of the following fantastic beaches is a great way to incorporate the seaside into your rural French holiday.

Banyuls sur Mer

Banyuls sur Mer is one of Languedoc's most popular beaches and once you've seen it, you'll know why. The long, picturesque beach is fringed by restaurants and cafes meaning there is a vibrant but chilled atmosphere. There are plenty of facilities in the area so it's great for families or those who don't like to be too cut off from the action when they visit the beach. There are small coves to explore at either end of the beach and plenty of spots at which to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet if you want some privacy. The foothills of the Pyrrnnes provide a stunning backdrop to the beach.

Espiguette

One of the most beautiful beaches in Languedoc, Espiguette consists of miles of golden sands. The beach is huge so there's never any trouble finding a quiet spot, even in the middle of the summer season. There is a large car park at the beach so it's easily reached if you have your own car or rental vehicle. There are no facilities on the beach so take plenty of food and water if you intend to stay for the whole day. Many of the gites in Languedoc will be within driving distance of this stunning beach so it's well worth a day trip if you enjoy unwinding in unspoiled surroundings.

Serignan

Serignan is definitely the place to go if you like a traditional beach experience. It's not totally devoid of amenities but as sand dunes hide the few nearby buildings from the beach, it feels very remote and secluded. There are a few cafes from which to buy food and drinks, but there is very little development around the beach. This is a great destination for families as the beach is clean, the sand is soft and there is the added attraction of pony rides for the children. It's popular with tourists and locals so does get quite busy in summer but is still worth a visit due to its traditional charm.
