The picturesque towns of the Loire Valley

Best known for its pretty towns and villages, the Loire Valley is one of France's most picturesque regions.

A popular destination for British holidaymakers, there is plenty to occupy newcomers or repeat visitors. Loire Valley gites are frequently luxurious havens and make excellent bases from which to explore the region. This article explores some of the prettiest towns the area has to offer.

Amboise Situated on the banks of the Loire River, this lively little town is a great destination for a day out. With bustling markets, quirky independent shops and welcoming cafes, Amboise is a wonderful place to explore. A riverside stroll is a pleasant way to soak up the atmosphere of the town and provides excellent photo opportunities.

The Chhteau Royal d'Amboise is a must-see and offers spectacular views from its Gothic balconies. Amboise hosts traditional wine fairs each year from Easter until mid-August making summer a fantastic time to visit. Orleans The gateway to the Loire Valley, Orleans was home to Joan of Arc and the town celebrates its most famous daughter at every turn.

Joan of Arc festivals take place each May with historical re-enactments, shows and exhibitions among the highlights. The spectacular Sainte-Croix Cathedral also features stained glass windows depicting the town heroine. A beautiful town for wandering round, Orleans is a vibrant and welcoming place.

Those staying in Loire Valley gites may well want to spend an evening or two in Orleans, soaking up the atmosphere. Bourges Bourges, once the capital of France is a fascinating city full of culture, sport and history. The annual Printemps de Bourges takes place here and is one of Europe's largest music festivals.

The event takes place in April and attracts visitors from all over the world. The city's cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a striking example of Gothic architecture. Bourges is wonderful for walking and there are countess narrow streets and alleyways to explore in the old part of the city.

Blois With pretty parks and a multitude of historic buildings, Blois is a charming and picturesque town. Previously home to the French royal courts, the town is full of history. Situated on a pair of hills, Blois is characterised by steep, narrow lanes.

There are plenty of fantastic views on offer from the top of the hills and Blois is a great town for walking. With remains of Renaissance buildings still standing in some parts of the town, there is something of interest around every corner. A stunning sound and light show takes place in the courtyard of Blois Chateau every evening throughout the summer months.
