Welcome to Chez Alouette, this beautiful town house is only 3 minutes’ walk from the town centre which has a great atmosphere, quaint cobbled streets, a busy covered market, plus very good restaurants and bars. The house is located in a very quiet side street and virtually next door to Château de Jonzac.
Although in the centre of town, the house backs onto open countryside, with tremendous views from the terrace and private garden, affording complete privacy, peace and tranquillity. All amenities are close by in the town so if you choose to skip cooking and extend the sunbathing, then there is an excellent choice of restaurants merely minutes’ walk away!
Jonzac is unique, a historical spa town and health resort, the season for holidaymakers is 10 months per year, therefore whenever you visit our lovely home, there is always something to do! A beautiful Château, a historic Romanesque Church, an area of outstanding beauty and religious importance, Jonzac is the jewel in the crown of the French west coast.
With the Atlantic resorts and surfing beaches only 45 minutes’ drive, or Bordeaux a similar distance, there are plenty of other popular and famous places to visit such as Cognac, St Emillion, Saintes, Royan, Rochefort and La Rochelle, the location is perfect.
Chez Alouette has all the facilities you will need for a relaxing holiday. The outside is brought into the house by the south facing, elevated terrace, which is on the same level as the reception/kitchen. It is a great outside space, and the private fenced garden below, shaded by a beautiful fig tree to one side and accessed by steps from the terrace, offers seclusion and a great place to relax. Although in the centre of the town, Chez Alouette is a very peaceful retreat in which you can enjoy tranquil days and evenings in complete peace and privacy.
The house generates a welcoming 'home from home' feel the moment you walk in the front door, providing very comfortable accommodation in which to enjoy your holiday. An original centuries old historic property, it has been thoughtfully and tastefully restored and refurbished in February 2013, retaining many of its original features.
The homely house is based on 3 floors, plus a cellar and is large enough for 5, probably best suited to a couple with 3 children (however we have had a good number of 4/5 adults stay in complete comfort!) A cot and high chair and stair gate is available subject to advance notice. Fresh towels and bed linen are provided weekly. Mid stay cleaning and/or a maid service, is by prior agreement and will be subject to a charge.
Good use has been made of the 52-sqm internal space, with a comfortable main bedroom containing a 140-cm double bed and on the same floor, a separate bathroom/shower room and toilet. The second double bedroom/television room/lounge on the top floor, is reached by a separate stairwell with its own privacy door. The bed in this room is a comfortable 140cm sofa bed with a full depth permanent mattress.
The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a fridge/freezer, a microwave oven and grill, espresso coffee machine, kettle, toaster plus numerous other kitchen aids. The small reception lounge adjoins the kitchen with access to the street via the main door. At the other end of the room, the kitchen door leads to the elevated south facing, semi-covered terrace, which overlooks the rear garden. The views are truly magnificent and large enough for al fresco dining, relaxing in the shade, or even sunbathing!
A large cellar/utility area, hewn out of chalkstone (ideal for keeping your wine cool!) houses a washing machine, a full-size freezer and a second toilet, plus plenty of room for storage of cases etc. Also stored in this area is a vacuum cleaner, broom, pan and brush, cleaning equipment and a clothes dryer.
The pretty garden shaded by a fig tree, has all the facilities you could wish for, on the raised terrace an outside gas barbecue, 6 seats, an outside dining table, a large wind-out sun shade/awning, plus a relaxation/sunbathing area. Below, accessed by steps, is the garden and lawn which also has a patio area for seating and table for drinks. The lawn area is large enough for the two sun loungers.

Chez Alouette is close to the centre of town, behind the Chateau. Initially locate the front of the Chateau and then drive or walk through the Chateau archway on the Rue du Chateau. After 150 metres you will come to a junction, Rue du Chateau D’eau is on your right. Please note this is a one-way street and you can’t drive down this road from the junction! To gain access to this road (to unload your car), you need to go straight ahead at the junction along Avenue Joffre and take the first right after 200 metres on Rue Emon, this small road joins Rue du Chateau D’eau.
Jonzac town is a medium sized Spa town and has a good number of restaurants, supermarkets and shops for your convenience, notably:
The closest bakery/patisserie is in the main square (Place du Chateau) close to the Chateau, just past the Hotel/Restaurant Coq D’or.
There is a covered market on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday morning which is based next to the church, which is approximately 500 metres walk. Every Wednesday evening through the summer, there is an outside night market in the same location, with cooked food for sale, wine, beer, soft drinks etc and live music.
Recommended restaurants: Apart from the excellent Restaurant Coq D’or, a little further down the main square (Place du Chateau) is the Restaurant/Brasserie Jonzacais, plus a small but excellent steak/grill restaurant (Le Grill du Chateau) and near the church is the very popular Le Comptoir du Marche. There are also a number of alternative restaurants which are listed and rated on Trip Advisor and well worth researching.
Les Antilles Spa and Leisure Centre is 800 metres (you can see it from the terrace!) and the thermal bath centres 1 km. In the same area are a number of exercise tracks and facilities and a leisure lake with beach. http://www.jonzac-tourisme.com/en/what-to-do-and-see/les-antilles-of-jonzac.html
On the outer ring road are directions to supermarkets – E.Leclerc, Intermarche, Lidl, plus a number of smaller supermarkets. There is also a small convenience store close to the church which is open from 9am to 10pm, 7 days a week.
