Maison Henri is a holiday home in the picturesque chateau town of Josselin, a French “petite cite de caractere”. An ideal base for walking, cycling or kayaking, the house is a few minutes stroll from the town centre. Bicycles and kayaks can be hired just 500 meters from the house. Josselin has a lively mix of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. The magnificent chateau, still inhabited by the Rohan family, has guided tours, during the summer months, in both French and English.
Every Saturday throughout the year a market is held in Josselin. Local fresh produce including, cheese, vegetables, shellfish and cold meats are on sale.
The accommodation, sleeping 6, (in three bedrooms) is on three levels. Maison Henri has been lovingly cared for and beautifully furnished in traditional Breton style by the owners. It includes a kitchen/breakfast room, a spacious lounge, and a summer dining room. The pretty back garden is on two levels affording a view of the canal where boats pass by in the summer months.
ACCOMMODATION IN MORE DETAIL
The front door opens directly to the entrance hall at street level. Just off the hall on the left is the breakfast room adjoining the "galley" kitchen. On the right hand side is the spacious lounge with its comfortable seating and woodburner for use during the cooler months. A TV monitor and DVD player is provided along with a selection of childrens’ and adults’ films. Also a CD player with IPOD and MP3 docking facility.
An archway leads through to the summer dining room. Perfect for dining whilst watching the “traffic” glide by along the canal. There is a small “juliet” balcony to the room which gives a view towards the chateau.
A WC and wash basin is also available at this level.
The elegant wooden staircase leads to the first and second floor.
The Master Bedroom (Bedroom 1) has a King Size bed and ensuite shower cubicle.
Bedroom 2 also has a King Size bed and a wash basin.
The family bathroom is on this level and has a bath, overhead shower and wash basin. Next door is a separate WC.
On the second floor is Bedroom 3, a twin room with 2 single beds.
All bedrooms have views over the canal.
Outside at the terrace level is a store room with a washing machine.
Lavender bushes, hollyhocks, roses and much more grow in abundance in this lovely garden. Stone steps access the lawned area which also has fruit trees. A BBQ and outdoor furniture are provided.
Dogs are generally welcome. Please enquire at time of booking! Assistance is offered to organise an appointment for the required veterinary treatment prior to your travel back to the UK.
A 20% discount on Brittany Ferries is available for guest use. This applies to each standard car and passenger.
Linen and towels are provided.
Changeover day is Sunday during High Season but flexible out of season. Minimum stay is 4 nights apart from High Season when it is 7 nights.
THE BRITTANY REGION
“Maison Henri” is in the Department of Morbihan in the beautiful region of Brittany in northern France.
Brittany is easily accessible from the UK via several Ferry Ports and is also served by flights from the UK to 4 French airports.
From spectacular beaches with rugged coastlines to vast sandy expanses, to peaceful woods and forests and the famous Nantes-Brest Canal, Brittany has all the makings of a perfect holiday.
The cuisine in the area includes crepes and galettes and of course the seafood! Mussels and oysters are available throughout the region, particularly in the summer months. Cider is produced here and local varieties are available in all supermarkets and restaurants.
During the summer numerous villages and town celebrate the "Pardon" which is predominantly a religious thanksgiving but is always followed by a celebratory meal (with a drink or two!) and Breton dancing.
A 20 minute drive from the accommodation takes you to the Domaine de Kerguéhennec. Here you will find an unusual sculpture park and chateau in magnificent grounds. There is a large lake and lots of woodland. Dogs are welcome! There is a small café in the park but opening times can be limited! In the chateau there are often art exhibitions.
The walled city of Vannes is about a 50 minute drive from Josselin. The harbourside restaurants in Vannes are always busy in the summer months. The local seafood, oysters and mussels being particularly popular.
There are many pretty Breton towns all with their own charms.
Nearby is the charming town of La Gacilly. During the summer months an outdoor photographic exhibition is held. Boat trips on the canal are available. The Yves Rocher factory, shop and Spa are situated here. Also a vegetarian restaurant - very unusual in France!
Rochefort-en-Terre, about 45 minutes away, was voted “prettiest village in France” in 2015. With its cobbled streets, plentiful restaurants and shops, it is a must on your holiday agenda!
'Musée de la Résistance de Bretagne'
The fascinating 'Musée de la Resistance is at St Marcel. It chronicles the vital role played by the people of Brittany at the time of the German Occupation during the second World War.
Close to St Marcel is the delightful market and canalside town of Malestroit.
The zoo at Pont Scorff is ideal for younger members of the family (about 1 hour away)
The Prehistoric Park at Malansac, about 45 minutes away, is another great day out for the youngsters. There are 30 scenes of reconstruction of the dinosaur age. The park is based on models and information from the Natural History Museum in Paris.
Nearby (1 hour drive) is the stunning medieval city of Rennes, capital of Brittany. There are numerous outdoor cafés and restaurants in the picturesque square plus shops so perfect if you want some retail therapy!
