The nearest town, Allonnes, lies one mile to the south of La Grange. In Allonnes there is a ‘Carrefour Market’ supermarket that boasts a fresh meat counter, two bakeries, a bar, a garage, numerous coiffeurs, as well as two cashpoints and a bank.
For those requiring a greater variety of foodstuffs, eleven miles away, there is the market town of Saumur. Importantly, there are several supermarkets in Saumur. There is, for example, a Leclerc on the far side of Saumur and an Intermarché on the nearside. Both have fresh fish and butchery counters. There is also a large selection of shops that can be visited in the center of the town.
The historic center of Saumur is well worth a visit. There are cobbled alleys, narrow ancient roads and all manner of interesting old buildings all within range of the jewel of the collection – the ancient chateau of Saumur that stands defensively over the whole town.
There are numerous bars, brasseries and good-quality restaurants in and around Saumur to satisfy the needs of even the most dedicated gourmet.
Wine producing areas nearby
Saumur itself is very famous for two distinct sorts of wine: The first, Champigny, is a deep, rich, fulsome red, and is an appellation that lies geographically slightly to the east of the town on the south side of the Loire;
Secondly, there are several sumptuous sparkling wines that are produced using the traditional champagne method. These include Ladubay; Ackerman; Veuve Cliquot and Gratien Meyer. There is also a wonderful sparkling wine that we highly recommend that comes from the Château du Petit Thouars though this originates from a vineyard located more in the direction of Chinon.
West of Saumur we come to the appellations of Côtes de Layon and Côtes d’Aubance. These specialise in the production of magnificent white dessert wines that have to be tasted to be believed.
On from there, we come to the Muscadets which center around the city of Nantes. These fruity invigorating whites form the perfect accompaniment to fish.
Leaving the gîte in an easterly direction we come first to the vinyards that lie closest, St Nicolas de Bourgueil & of course Bourgueil itself.
