Description

Gite de la Guissare is a former farmhouse on the Domaine de la Guissare estate, previously a small vineyard but now our family home.
Set in four acres of landscaped grounds we encourage guests to enjoy the parkland. We have sunbeds on the lawns, tables and chairs in shady nooks, a pigeonnier with comfy seating and tea and coffee making facilities – so just relax and bring a good book. For younger guests, there is a small play area, and a picnic bench under the shade of a giant Cedar tree.
Completed last year our pool deck offering a raised area in full sun with views over our pony paddocks and down to our lake with views of the Chateau in Duras proved very popular with guests. The deck is furnished and has a range of pool toys for guests of all ages. There is a separate children’s pool, offering smaller guests the opportunity to splash in a large but shallow area. For summer 2018 we are installing a Summer kitchen and BBQ area adjacent to the pool with tables placed under shady trees.
The cottage has two bedrooms, a ground floor master with adjacent bathroom and a mezzanine family room which can sleep four in one double and two single beds. The living area is open plan offering a brand new fitted and well-equipped kitchen, dining area with large table and six chairs and a sitting area beside the huge open fireplace.
When not enjoying the gite, gardens and pool, guests can explore the surrounding area. We sit on the border of three departments, Lot et Garonne, Gironde and Dordogne. Each has a wealth of varied countryside and attractions for visitors - from the beaches and sand dunes of Arcachon through the plum orchards and sunflowers around Duras to the magnificent river Dordogne drifting lazily through some of the most beautiful villages in France. The local town of Duras has a magnificent Chateau, open to the public and well worth a visit – even just to enjoy the views from the towers over the rolling vineyards. In addition, the local tourist office offers guides to all the local wine-makers - you can tour the ‘route du vins’ or simply drop into the wine tasting centre in the town to sample the Cotes de Duras range. For those with a sweet tooth Duras is home to a chocolate making family business, Maison Guinguet producers of the most fabulous Chocolates.

Peaceful rural area surrounded by vineyards, fields of sun flowers, plum orchards & woodland but with easy access to local amenities & activities. Only 4 kms away is Duras with a chateau, restaurants, bars and a good range of local shops including a decent sized supermarket. The beautiful city of Bordeaux is just over the hour by car but can also be accessed by a twice hourly rail service. Other towns include Bergerac, Perigueux and Brantome to the north and Agen, Villeneuve sur Lot and the Bastide towns of Lot et Garonne to the south.Day trips are also possible to the beautiful city of Toulouse or the famous Citadel of Carcassonne. Short Boating trips are available on the rivers Dordogne and Lot, as are self drive hires of day boats. Golf at the magnificent Golf de Vigiers is a short drive from Guissare - even a visit for lunch without the need to play is memorable! During July and August the neighboring towns host not only weekly morning markets but also evening events which include the opportunity to buy food and wines from local suppliers and join in to eat at the communal tables - great fun and well loved by locals and visitors alike.

#72. First Class In Everyway!!

An amazing week, fantastic gite and wonderful hosts!

This was our first visit to France and we could not have asked for a nicer place to stay! The gite has a home from home feel (But far better weather!!) with all the comforts, ie Wifi, British TV and a fab gas BBQ which we cooked off all week!! It is an extremely versatile gite that would suit a couples holiday (like ourselves) but also lends itself as a family or group destination due to lay out of bedrooms and also the cot facility.

One of the highlights for us was the incredible pool! Extremely well maintained and spotlessly clean. The gardens/ land that the gite is set in are quite spectacular, lending itself well for seeing some of the fantastic wildlife France has to offer( we saw lizards, a tree frog and deer to name just a few!)

The gite was very easy to find, being only an hour from Bordeaux airport it was easily accessible. The town of Duras is less than 10 mins drive and offers great local restaurants, a supermarket, petrol station and bank along with the reknowned Chateau De Duras which is must see. Sadly we didn't get time to visit, but Berticot vineyard offers tours and is only 5 mins away from the gite. Within half an hours drive there's is a huge array of things to see and visit, we would reccomend the town of Emyet as it has an incredible market on a Thursday and offers some beautiful restaurants (one of which being Michelin starred which we thoroughly enjoyed at extremely reasonable price). Too many places to mention but all in all a great location!!

Last but by no means least the lovely Lorna who couldn't do enough for us. Nothing was too much trouble, even down to providing us with a breakfast pack (French breads, jams, milk, juice etc) as she knew we were arriving late from the airport and would miss the supermarket.

All in all a exceptional stay. We have already booked for next year!!

#68. An absolute joy!

We couldn't have asked for a better stay at Guissare. The gite has recently been renovated and the facilities are top-end.

Perfect set-up in the gite for families large and small - we slept in the downstairs bedroom and the kids slept upstairs (2 singles and a double up there).

Equally, upstairs is also fine for adults and you could easily have 2 small families staying in the gite.

There's a cot, wifi, washing machine, and British TV. There's also a gas BBQ.

And then there's the pool! Just across the garden, and again just been built with a great decking. Kids would have been there all day if we'd let them!

There's lots for the kids to do (in addition to the climbing frame in the garden). Very nearby, Duras Castle is fantastic, and short drives (all less than an hour) take you to Chateaux Bridiore (medieval games), the Vegetale Labyrinth (karting round a maze) and Casteljaloux (fantastic beach at the lake).

Bordeaux and Bergerac are both less than an hour away and they're well worth a visit. But there are lots of really nice little towns and villages with day and night markets, which are great for all ages. Eymet and St Emilion were probably our favourites, but we were at a good few more which all have nice cafes and squares.

The kids loved the night markets - we went to Levignac and Duras at night. Lots of music, food, wine, ice cream etc and a really fun atmosphere. The owners live in the main house and they'll keep you right with which markets are on on certain days.

The best villa/gite holiday we've ever had. We'd go at least once a month if we could!!
