Family Holidays in the Dordogne

Aquitaine

The Dordogne region of France makes a great destination for a family holiday. There are plenty of attractions for children of all ages and lots for mum and dad to enjoy, too. A largely rural region, with much of the land given over to agriculture, the Dordogne is perfect for a relaxing holiday filled with nature activities. There are numerous self-catering gites scattered about the region and many of them have their own private pool, essential for cooling off in the height of summer. Here are some of the most popular family activities in the Dordogne:

Bergerac Aquapark

Situated on the Bergerac - Bordeaux road, this picturesque aquapark is a wonderful place to spend a day. Surrounded by lush green woodlands, the aquapark has several huge swimming pools with numerous slides and play areas. There are other activities, too, such as table tennis, canoeing and beach volleyball. There's even a Turkish-style Hammam for adults to unwind. Food is served all day, with snacks, ice-creams and more substantial offerings. The aquapark is perfect for days when it's too hot to do much sightseeing.

Jacquou Park

Actually three parks in one, Jacquou Park is located north of Le Bugue. Featuring an aquapark, an amusement park and an animal park, there is plenty here to keep kids amused for several hours. The animal park in particular is a treat, with animals including llamas, cattle and goats. The amusement park is filled with rides and attractions for young children and there's even a miniature railway just for little ones.

Le Village Du Bournat

Another attraction located near Le Bugue, Le Village De Bournat is hugely popular with local families and tourists. The reconstructed village demonstrates life in France as it would have been 100 years ago. There is a working organic farm, traditional craft displays and even a working windmill. There's a small funfair for children and plenty of picnic areas and outdoor walks. There are cafes in the village so there's no need to pack a picnic. There are lots to occupy children and adults here and the village is well-located for a visit from most of the gites in the Dordogne region.

Le Parc Aquarium Du Perigord Noir

This huge aquarium is a great place to head when the weather isn't too good or on rainy days. With over 6000 fish on display, there is plenty to look at. The staff put on regular feeding shows and the well-presented Insect Zone will be a hit with children. Children are often invited to join in with feeding the fish, making for a truly interactive experience.
