Our spacious traditional Charentaise house is ideal for a large family needing some wheelchair access. About an hour's drive from the sea with plenty to do in the local area.
The house is on the edge of a friendly village which has a bar and shop, both about 2 minutes walk away. It was built in the traditional 'charentaise' style about 100 years ago and is now fully modernised. Gardens to front and rear produce figs, grapes, apples, pears & cherries.
Inside, bedroom four is a twin en-suite room designed for people with restricted mobility. It is on the ground floor with direct access to the dining-kitchen and through to the patio and swimming pool area, all on the same level. The hall and lounge are also on this level.
A large patio area, with gas barbecue and a dining capacity for up to 10, leads up to and around the heated 10x5m pool in our secluded garden, surrounded by Laurel hedging. The pool has an automatic safety cover instead of being fenced off. A grassed area with some shade surrounds the patio & pool.
The coast is about an hours drive away. La Rochelle, Royan, Fouras, Ile d'Oleron, Ile de Re, Ile de Aix all have beaches and are well worth a visit. There is plenty to do away from the coast as well. Saintes, with its Roman Amphitheatre, and Cognac are less than an hour's drive away. There are a variety of lakes & riverside locations for swimming & canoeing. Lots of tourist information leaflets are available in the lounge to give you some ideas for days out.

We spent a wonderful week in Paillé. The house, the pool, the weather were all just perfect. Extremely well equipped, comfortable and spotless house (so many soft and fluffy towels, toiletries, cleaning products too). Comfortable beds. Just what we needed to recharge the batteries. The village bar and shop were closed when we were there - but not a problem as Aulnay is just a few minutes away with bakeries and supermarket. Beautiful 12th century church in Aulnay not to be missed. St Jean d'Angeley lovely too - had a tasty, good-value meal there at Les Jacobins on our last night. Saintes and Saint Palais sur Mer well-worth a visit too. We'll definitely be back. Many thanks to Gill, and to Carol and Dave the caretakers.
I think we found a rare gem of a house for our holiday this year! Thank you for such a lovely holiday! We only booked it 2 weeks before we arrived and communication with the owners was very good. Lots of information about what was already in the house made packing for our first family holiday abroad so much easier. There is everything you could want in the house and we were still finding things a week into the holiday! Little touches like towels for the pool were helpful and we all enjoyed the good WIFI connection through out the house. We spent a lot of time in the pool which was the draw to the house. We bought bread from the local shop and food from local supermarkets and enjoyed trips to La Palmyre Zoo, Cognac, La Rochelle and Saint-Georges-de-Didonne beach. We would certainly come back to such a beautiful house.
With friends, my husband and I have holidayed in gites in France for over 40 years and in our extensive experience, properties have ranged from outstanding to OK (with one notable exception which we still fondly refer to as "The Hovel"!) , Using this experience, we cannot recommend Gill and Paul's lovely house highly enough to visitors wanting a peaceful holiday. The beautifully clean and heated pool, local shop together with bar and restaurant combined to offer little incentive to venture far from Paille and thus, our recommendations are restricted to the house and village. The shop is just a minute's stroll for your morning bread, pain au chocolat etc., and indeed provided us with most of our grocery requirements. En route to the shop, you pass the bar/restaurant, where the delightful Nadine offers basic but delicious lunches most days. She is so accommodating and is mainly responsible for the several extra pounds we all carried home! With 4 courses for around 16E including unlimited wine, we wished we could have brought her home in a suitcase. However, BEWARE any form of movement for the rest of the afternoon should you attempt all 4 courses. Although this holiday was limited to a good morning walk around the beautiful countryside followed by coffee at Nadine's, plenty of swimming and reading in the sunshine, we have visited this area several times and confirm that La Rochelle, Chatelaillon-Plage, St Jean d'Angely and Cognac are well worth a visit if you need a livelier day out. The house itself is lovely - our hosts Gill and Paul have certainly gone that extra mile to ensure a stress free holiday, so much thought has gone into equipping the house and making the stay so very comfortable, so thank you and our compliments. It would have been impossible for the caretakers Carol, David and their lovely daughter Lorraine to have made our welcome and stay more enjoyable so our thanks to you too. On only 2 occasions have we revisited houses but we are just waiting for the flights to be announced before booking our next holiday there.
