Brittany's Best Food Festivals by Bev Fearis

Brittany

Every year Brittany hosts a series of festivals devoted to food, from crepes to seafood to smelly sausage. Bev Fearis, owner of Gites Guebernez, picks her favourites.

Festival Saumon

July 5-7

Thanks to its location and history, the pretty town of Port Scorff has a strong connection with salmon fishing. Every July it celebrates its cherished pink fish with three days of music and entertainment, cooking workshops, and special meals, all featuring salmon of course. www.festivalsaumon.fr

Fete de la Crepe

July 27-28

Brittany’s specialty is the crepe, or the savoury version the galette, so it’s no surprise that it hosts a festival dedicated to the pancake. Each July, the Morbihan village of Gourin lays on two days of dancing, Breton pipe bands, concerts, games and entertainment. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a pancake-making competition to see who can make the biggest crepe. Apparently it’s all in the mix. fetedelacrepe.fr

Fete de l’Andouille

August 25

It’s an acquired taste, to say the least, but the French can’t get enough of this rather smelly tripe sausage that comes from Guémené Sur Scorff. Each year this quaint little Medieval town comes alive in the last Saturday of August when this local speciality is celebrated. Even if you’re not brave enough to try it, come for the music and to soak up the atmosphere. www.tourismepaysroimorvan.com

Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques

April 12-13 2014

Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Loguivy-de-la-Mer and Erquy are all famous for their scallops and every year, on the last weekend in April, they host a festival to celebrate Saint-Jacques (the French for scallops). There’s music, dancing, fishing trips and more scallops than you’ll ever see. Sample them fresh from their shells straight from the fishing boats or in one of the restaurants which put on special menus. On Saturday morning, follow the Knights of the Scallop as they parade through the streets. They’ll be the last scallops caught in the Cotes d’Armnor before the new season begins in October. www.saintquayportrieux.com
