An Introduction to the Limousin Region
France's Limousin region makes a great base for exploring the south west of the country. Limousin is bordered by the regions of Poitou-Charentes, Centre, Midi-Pyrrnnes, Aquitaine and Auvergne, meaning there are endless possibilities when it comes to days out and excursions.
There are countless rustic gites in Limousin, making this a great spot for a relaxing holiday. Although the region is inland so you won't have access to a beach, some lakes are suitable for swimming and many gites have private swimming pools.
The Limousin countryside is characterised by its many hills, valleys, lakes and dense forests. The landscape is especially beautiful in this part of France and much of the countryside remains untouched. An area of great natural beauty, the Limousin region is perfect for those wanting to get back to nature.
The countryside is dotted with spectacular chateaux and pretty little medieval villages so if you're staying in one of the charming gites in Limousin, it's definitely advisable to have the use of a car to enable you to explore the area. Limousin's capital, Limoges, is famous for its porcelain and enamel industry and is a beautiful city to visit.
Dominated by a huge, Gothic cathedral, Limoges retains much of its medieval charm. The Boucherie area of the city is popular with tourists who flock to see the narrow, winding streets lined with original buildings. There are lots of charming bistros and cafes in the area, perfect for enjoying an al fresco lunch while soaking up the atmosphere of this beautiful city.
Limoges has an abundance of pretty parks and gardens, adding some pleasant green areas to the city. The town of Aubusson is another attractive place to spend a day out. Aubusson is known for its long history of producing fine tapestries and carpets.
Continuing a tradition that started back in the 15th Century, the town still has many workshops producing these goods. Situated in the Creuse Valley, Aubusson is a charming and picturesque town. The Corrrze area, in southern Limousin, is the perfect destination for keen horse-riders.
The countryside here is dotted with equestrian farms, riding schools and stables. Many of the Corrrze riding schools will cater for all abilities, so experienced riders and beginners can enjoy a day of lessons or riding. Children are welcome at most riding schools, making this a great day out for all the family.
