Activity Holidays in Aquitaine

Aquitaine

There can't be many other regions in France with the sheer variety of activities on offer as Aquitaine. The perfect destination for foodies, history-lovers and adventurers alike, Aquitaine really does have something for everyone. One of the benefits of holidaying in gites or villas in France is that you have the flexibility and freedom to do pretty much anything you like. If your holiday party includes a few active types, you'll find plenty to occupy them in Aquitaine.

Golfing Holidays

The famous 19th Century Pau Golf Club is located in a spectacularly scenic location at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains. The course is the oldest in Europe and boasts a lovely Victorian clubhouse. Built by British soldiers, it's one of the most popular golf courses with holidaymakers. For an ocean-side golfing experience, pay a visit to Moliets Gold Course. The stunning setting between the Atlantic Ocean and dense pine forests makes it one of the most attractive courses in the world. It's widely considered to be one of the best golf courses in the whole of France and gets refreshingly breezy on hot summer days meaning you might struggle with ball-control but you're unlikely to get too hot.

Horse-riding

There are numerous riding schools in Aquitaine and most will offer lessons or tuition for all levels of ability. Beginners can learn the basics, while more experienced riders can enjoy a canter around the countryside. There are one- or two-hour treks if you just fancy a short ride but many schools offer treks with overnight stays if you want to make riding a bigger part of your holiday.

Surfing

Biarritz is one of the best surfing spots in the whole of Europe and novices and experienced surfers alike flock here when the conditions are good. With long, clean, sandy beaches ad a fun, vibrant atmosphere, even non-surfers will enjoy spending a day at Biarritz. There are lessons available for newbies so if it's your first time, book yourself some tuition and learnt the basics before you jump into the surf.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting is hugely popular in Aquitaine. The main centres for rafting are Orthez, Vavarrenx and Sauveterre-de-Bearn so if you fancy a rafting holiday, try and base yourself near one of these towns when researching gites and villas in France. One-day rafting excursions are popular but there are also half-day (and sometimes even shorter) trips available.
