The barn is situated on an old Roman road that ran from Rodez to Clermont, at the edge of the small hamlet of Ydes-Bourg (that itself has Gallo-Roman origins) surrounded by farmland and rolling hills. The village has a historic 12th century church & Commandery, built by the Knight Templars, & is located next to the slow flowing Sumene river – a popular trout fishing river. The village is residential and has no shops although it is visited each day by a bread van, there are however shops, banks, post office, restaurants & a large Super U supermarket in the nearby town of Ydes (5 mins drive). The historic small town of Saignes is also only 5 mins drive away & also has a good range of small independent shops. The location is extremely tranquil, the predominant sound being the bells on the local Cantal cattle, and the surrounding roads see little traffic making them excellent for walking or cycling.
The surrounding area offers excellent cycling facilities, the roads being quiet, fairly level & there is also an extensive cycle track that follows the old railway line for over 10kms. Various watersport facilities & swimming is offered at the large lake to the north of Bort-les-Orgues. Near Riom-ès-Montagnes in the middle of the volcanic park is Scenoparc, a new theme park which traces the relationship between humans and animals in a 35 hectare setting which has barely changed since Neolithic times. Other sites to see include Chateau d’Anjony, a beautiful chateau with 16th century frescoes on the walls, the Garabit viaduct, a superb structure designed by Gustave Eiffel which spans the Truyère valley, and the Musée de la Resistance at Auvers.
