Calvi: The Jewel of Corsica

Corsica

The Corsican town of Calvi has a long, rich history but today is best known for its excellent food and drink and tourist attractions.

If you're looking for traditional rustic gites de France Corsica has plenty to choose from. The size of the island means that it's easy to get around. No matter where you're staying, Calvi will be accessible by either car or public transport and the town is well worth at least one visit during your stay.

For the best views in Calvi and possibly in Corsica, a visit to the citadel is a must. Standing on top of a steep hill, the citadel isn't easy to reach but it's worth the effort. Try and avoid walking up the hill in the midday sun if you can as it's not pleasant in the heat.

There are many, many steps and steep cobbled paths leading up to the citadel but there are enough cafes and shops dotted along the route to sustain you. There is also an art gallery halfway up which provides a pleasant place to rest. The views from the citadel are spectacular, especially at dusk and sunset.

Calvi's harbour is a haven for luxury yachts carrying wealthy European holidaymakers and the expensive restaurants in the area are testament to this. For more reasonably priced dining options, head to one of the charming cafes or bistros frequented by the locals.

Calvi is a great destination for shopping and the streets are lined with quirky little independent shops. The town has many excellent delicatessens so if you're staying in one of the many self-catering gites de France Corsica is home to, be sure to stock up on local specialties to take back with you.

Dried meats are hugely popular in Corsica and you'll find them sold all over Calvi. Honey and olive oil are also good buys and far better than anything you are used to using at home. The beach at Calvi is simply stunning and its size means it rarely gets crowded. At five miles long, there is space for everyone and it's always possible to find a quiet spot.

The sandy beach has spectacular views of the citadel and nearby cafes and shops provide refreshments - so there's no need to pack a picnic. Some beachfront restaurants will even serve your lunch directly onto the beach, allowing you to enjoy the ultimate lazy day.
