An Introduction to the Midi-Pyrenees Region

Midi-Pyrenees

Midi-Pyrenees is the largest region in France and covers an area larger than the entire country of Switzerland. As you'd imagine, there is plenty to see and do in the area. Bordered to the south by the magnificent Pyrenees mountains, the region provides an alternative to the gites in Alsace which tend to be popular with those wanting to holiday in a mountainous region of France. The region of Midi-Pyrenees only dates back to the last century so many of the towns retain the character and traditions of the regions they previously belonged to.

Major Towns and Cities

The spectacular historical city of Toulouse is by far the largest urban area in Midi-Pyrenees and around one-third of the region's population live in or around it. The city boasts a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, as well as a vibrant dining scene. The next largest city is Tarbes, lying near the Spanish border. Like much of the region, the two major urban areas enjoy long, hot summers and relatively mild winters. The other major towns of the area are Albi, Castres and Montauban.

Countryside

Midi-Pyrenees is largely rural and is a perfect destination for keen walkers or those who want a rural holiday. There are countless rustic gites in picturesque, rural settings and, like the gites in Alsace, many have striking mountain views. The region is very sparsely populated outside its few urban centres and much of the land is used for agriculture. There are several large vineyards dotted around the region's countryside and most will welcome visitors. Most villages and towns will have regular markets, selling the freshest local produce so those staying in self-catering accommodation in rural locations will have no difficulty stocking up.

Mountain Holidays

The south of the Midi-Pyrenees is dominated by the mountain chain the region gets its name from. The peaks reach over 3000 metres and provide a stunning backdrop to the area. The Pyrenees are a great place to visit in all months of the year and contain all manner of attractions. There are many pleasant woodland and mountain walks on the lowers slopes with paths suitable for most levels of fitness and ability. These paths are accessible during spring, summer and autumn and provide beautiful scenery throughout the changing seasons. In the winter, the area becomes a ski resort, attracting French and international winter sports enthusiasts.
