Where to stay in Languedoc

Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc is one of the most popular French holiday destinations among Brits but the region is huge with a variety of landscapes so deciding where to stay can be difficult. There are enough gites in Languedoc to cater for all tastes and budgets but thinking about what you want from your holiday will help you choose the right part of this stunning region. Whether you want city lights and nightlife or complete peace and quiet in the countryside, Languedoc has it all.

Nightlife

If your holiday wouldn't be complete without several nights out spent in lively bars and sophisticated clubs, you'll need to be near one of Languedoc's main urban areas. Montpeilier and Toulouse probably have the best nightlife in the region and both are surrounded by gites within easy driving distance. Perpignan, Nimes and Avignon also have decent nightlife but most other towns and cities will only have a few small bars on offer.

Beaches

Languedoc has some wonderful beaches but your favourite will no doubt depend on what kind of environment you prefer. The developed coastal areas of Sete and La Grande Motte are great for families with plenty of refreshments and activities available. If you'd rather feel closer to nature and have no distractions other than the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, the vast stretch of Espiguette Beach might be your best bet. There are lots of fantastic lakeside beaches in Languedoc so don't discount these if you're staying further inland but still want a beach experience.

Mountains

Languedoc's mountains attract visitors all year round: hikers and day-trippers in the summer, spring and autumn and skier and winter sports enthusiast in the colder months. The mountains tend to be considerably colder than the rest of the region so can make for a pleasant day out in the summer months. The mountain regions can be rather rainy so you probably won't want to stay there if you're hoping for a sunshine break but plenty of the gites in Languedoc are within easy reach of the mountains, making them ideal for picnics and walking.

Rural Life

The Languedoc region of Lozere is the least populated in France so it's the ideal place for a rural retreat. If you don't need to be near a large town or city and enjoy immersing yourself in the simple, French rustic experience, Lozere may be perfect for you. Be prepared to make your own entertainment though as you won't find lively nightlife anywhere nearby.
